Seville Estate 2009 Chardonnay Yarra Valley

Winemakers Comments

The vineyards of Seville Estate are located in the cooler, southern regions of the Yarra Valley.  As a result, our Chardonnay style is crisper, tighter in structure with citrus fruit characters.

The 2009 vintage was another very hot and dry growing season, similar to 2007.  After a period of cool and wet weather during the first half of December, very dry and warm weather prevailed across Victoria for the remainder of summer. An extraordinary heatwave in the last week of January, which stretched into early February, and which was also accompanied by numerous all-time record maximum temperatures on 7th February. Melbourne reached 46.4°C, the maximum temperture ever recorded. Seville Estate’s weather station which dosen’t read over 40°C failed to take any reading for 4 days over that period. Very little rain fell after mid-December with Seville receiving just 12mm. Bush fires rampaged over the state during this period with the peak of devastation on 7th February where a large area was burnt around the Yarra Valley. Seville Estate was not directly affected by the fires, although smoke and the hot weather where major concerns. Overall Seville has produced some good wines; Chardonnays are fantastic, early picked, tight citrus/melon fruits with great lees integration. A tough vintage, one that won’t be forgotten.....

Fruit is hand picked and gently whole bunch pressed. Juice is run directly to tank and gravity fed to barrel. Fermentation occurs naturally in barrel.  A range of French oak coopers and formats (225L – 500L) with 30% new are sourced to introduce oak complexity.  Following primary fermentation, maturation continues on lees for 10 months. Malolactic fermentation is not encouraged.

Tasting Notes:

Tight melon/grapefruit aromas are apparent. Medium bodied with citrus fruit and match stick flint lees complexity. The melon/grapefruit flavours continue to the end with a bright acid finish. This zesty fresh style is designed for aging over the early to medium term.
